In the work Memories of Times, Julia Holt has used a green and yellow palette to depict an archway leading away from a place. She says, “I wanted to capture the feeling of memory and looking back through the eyes of a child who only remembers glimpses of the journey endured”.
Within the work there is a sadness, a depth of soul that is between two places, namely the balance of the normative and the felt, where one can experience the feeling of the people and their journey.
The mood of both works is further enhanced by thick impasto oil paint that leaves a highly textured, almost sculptural finish to the artwork in places, whilst in other places on the work, the thinner oil paint allows the light to come through from the layers underneath, creating a feeling of space and depth.
