Empty Trains

The story of the incredible rescue of the Bulgarian Jews in the second world war is remarkable and after reading “Beyond Hitler’s Grasp” by Michael Bar-Zohar, Julia Holt was inspired to produce this suite of work, celebrating the 50 000 Jews of Bulgaria who were saved from Nazi persecution. Although the trains stood waiting to deport them, not one Jew was taken and all of the trains were sent back empty!
